Author Topic: 2 songs recorded - can you tell which is electronic and which is an acoustic kit  (Read 655 times)

My band The Reverse Engineers released 2 new songs. One was recorded with an Alesis Strike Pro electronic kit (triggering Superior Drummer 2.0 in a DAW). And the other song was recorded with an acoustic drum kit.

Can you match the song with the kit?

Welcome to the forum Dan!

I suspect that most people will not want to go on record trying to figure out which is which.

Technically both track are recordings of acoustic drums. To me it's a toss up mainly because of the way it is mixed. Atomic Kid seemed as if the snare was a little machine gunning, but that can be caused by compression. I'm going to say "Out of Love" is the triggered kit. My reason has to do with the tracking of the hi-hat. The open to closed is not as consistent on that song which would be cause by a tight ehat range setting on the hi-hat controller pedal. Lift your foot too much and the hi-hat sound more open than it should. Atomic Kid doesn't have this issue, however it can still hear a slight lift in the hi-hat pedal when being played. The difference is that with an acoustic hi-hat the slight lifting of the foot while playing would be less drastic because an acoustic hat is not limited to a fixed set of samples and has move slop in the range.

That's my guess.

I listened to both songs mainly on the strength of your name, the Reverse Engineers. I love it. I can't tell which is electronic and which is acoustic. My guess would be Out of Love is the electronic due to the cymbals sounded electronic to me. Great songs, thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you like the band name and the music. I will reveal which is electronic and which acoustic, but not yet. I'm going to give some time for people to reply to this forum thread. Interesting feedback!

Thanks for listening.

I'm going to say Atomic Kid is the electronic drum version and Out of Love is the acoustic recording  :)

Thanks for listening to the tunes. I'm not ready to reveal the answer quite yet. I'm interested to hear why you came to that conclusion though. It's interesting to get feedback on the recording of the drums for these songs.

Out of love, the cymbals sound processed and have a shorter decay.

Its time I revealed which song is the electronic and which is acoustic.

Atomic Kid was recorded on the Alesis Strike Pro electronic Kit.

Out of Love was recorded live on an acoustic kit.

I modeled the electronic kit to be a very similar setup to the acoustic kit. Both have china cymbals. Interestingly, the acoustic kit has cymbals that one is a Paiste Fast crash and a Sabian Thin Crash. So that's why they had quick decay.

I find it interesting that we have reached a point that you can make an electronic kit sound like an acoustic kit. The Superior Drummer 2.0 software in conjunction with the Alesis Strike Pro, really can get close to the sound of a live kit.

Thanks everyone for listening.
