Strata Prime - Importing samples
« on: May 16, 2025, 06:03:25 AM »
When importing my own samples to use as stacks, all I get is problems.
Firstly, I'll import a sample to stack, it then asks me if I want to save changes to the kit, I click 'yes' then it moves to the default stock kit (NY Maple), so I have to re-load my user kit.
Next, come to another stack to load the same sample I just imported (from the user library), the library is empty and I have to turn the module off and on again to see my user library.
Thirdly, and most annoyingly, stacks made from my own samples trigger at random velocities, producing volumes ranging from barely audible to ear-splitting with consecutive hits (this doesn't happen by stacking stock sounds). This effectively means I can't use my own samples. I've tried using all the allowable sample rates and bit rates when making my samples (going up to 96KHz and 24bit) but it makes no difference. I find this quite disappointing for a flagship module that costs so much.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong and maybe I'm being hasty in blaming the module, but has anyone else had this problem with their own samples and found a fix?

I do not have one of the Strata Modules...for the most part..after initial release there were Features dropped that caused me to lose interest.

There hasn't been a lot of Feedback/Participation on this Forum as there are not a lot of Owners/Users and the BFDdrums Forum has yet to add an E-Drum section like there was in previous (FXpansion Forum).
There is No Information or participation for the Strata Modules there either..

As with the STRIKE Series instead of Forum participation...there are/were many Facebook groups created.
I don't belong to or participate in any Social Media Sites.
There is a PUBLIC GROUP Alesis Drums & Percussion User Group (32K members)..that has a few Strata Owners.
otherwise there is the PRIVATE GROUP (965 members)..Alesis Strata Prime Users.
You may or may not find answers at either of those.

I requested a Beta Team for the Modules as there is one for the Software..however..No response.
I presume inMusic/Alesis are content with just monitoring the Facebook Groups
I can only assist with my knowledge of the BFD Software and how it relates to the Strata Series as the software developers are the same Team...

Firstly, I'll import a sample to stack, it then asks me if I want to save changes to the kit, I click 'yes' then it moves to the default stock kit (NY Maple), so I have to re-load my user kit.

Saving a Kit is the last step (or should be) and creates a User Kit..
Factory Kits are write protected and it appears that the Strata Modules.. after saving edits.. defaults back to Factory/Kit settings. So you would need to load the User Kit to continue Editing.
After importing what happens if you select No..can you then go to Options.."Save as"..instead of the Save Button?..and save as a Kit Piece?
That may allow you to continue Editing the current kit preset without having to reload etc.
Personally I would be saving the Stack created as a Kit piece so you wouldn't have to re-create every time you switched kits or wanted to use that stack/kit piece in another Kit.

Next, come to another stack to load the same sample I just imported (from the user library), the library is empty and I have to turn the module off and on again to see my user library.

The Module doesn't appear to Auto-refresh after a sample assignment..like the Strike Editor and others that rescan after each Instrument assignment in order to see it in Edit Mode...may be a bug

Is the velocity triggering random?..I see there is still triggering issues where a High velocity Hit triggers a Low Velocity sample..and vice versa...STRATA PRIME Whose it for? | 1 Year Review.

The Stacks feature is also in the software..however the software is a Full Editor and different procedure(GUI) applying some of the features in the module..same results

The Stack is separate from the main Kit piece.
Have you set the levels (Velocity Threshold, Volume,Switch etc) correctly for the layer/layers you added the sample to in order for it to trigger at the velocity/volume when you want?
You may have articulations triggering at a higher velocity/volume in a lower velocity layer etc.
There is a lot you can do to dial in the stack. You can also setup Velocity Splits.
Dialing in a one shot to work how you want may take some time to figure out the velocity range(s) for a Kit piece.

As far as sample rate...default for BFD samples is 48...typical for mixing.
96 may be a higher quality but the trade off is space etc.
I don't know how the Module reacts (Mixed rate Mixing) to placing a different rate like 96 mixed in with 48 in a Kit...maybe no affect at all.

That kind of sounds like a good topic to start.  ;)

I don't have a Strata Module either, but I have been watching your responses to some of the questions on this site. It sounds to me the Strata Module has a few quirks base on things you stated here and in another topic about MIDI change programs. I'm now wondering just how different is the Strata Modules from most other drum modules...  :-\

Thanks everyone, lots to digest there and try out. Much appreciated  :)
