I'm older than most all of you. It wasn't songs, rather, it was drummers.

Iron Butterfly's In A Goda Da Vida is what made me want to get into drums when I was a kid.

For any of the "youngsters" who don't know about Buddy Rich, I'd suggest they invest in part or all of this two and a half hour video about him. You'll not forget him. :)

owning a drum kit (or part thereof in my case) doesn't make you a drummer any more than owning a camera makes you a photographer!

Then later on in junior high, Max Roach for his style and Ed Shaughnessy for his double bass.
And then I went to a Yes concert when I was in high school. Bill Bruford blew me away!  Probably the greatest influence on the way I play to this day.

Actually it was because of Rick Allen I got into electronic percussion.

Drumming in general, I just liked rock music and said I don't think I can do that guitar thing, but drums I might be able to fake. ;)

OK, the question is songs that made you want to drum not drummers you admire most. This is going back a ways, but this is when I first got hooked on a drum beat and wanted to play drums (I'm leaving out the marching drum influence since I am from New Orleans and Mardi Gras parade band drumming caught my interest as a child).

Sometimes simple is best. Keep you ears open for the cool kick drum rhythm on this one:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuqHlv1YPe0

Carry on gentlemen.

zombie_fart

None of these major inspirational songs or drummers but both made me want to drum..

When I was 12 I was obsessed with system of a down, so of what I recently found (after getting a new kit after 7 years of not playing) I still enjoy playing to it. Will not be to every ones taste though.
