dm-10 kick repair - where to resolder piezo wires?
« on: April 16, 2025, 11:40:39 AM »
Hello everyone.

I have a dm-10 studio mesh kit. The bass drum suddenly stopped working. I decided to open it up and figured out why ;D The two foams are gone, they're completely wrecked and the piezo wires came loose from the jack connection. Before I look for a foam replacement (any suggestion welcome), I would like to check if the piezo still works but I can't figure out where to solder the wires into the jack terminals.

As you can see here https://imgur.com/a/I1ookQQ, there are two resistors in the jack connector: the "first resistor" is soldered to the "top terminal" at one end, then twisted with a "second resistor" and soldered to the "right" terminal at the other end. The "second resistor" is twisted to the first resistor and soldered to the "right" terminal at one end and "free" at the other end. Where should I solder the red and black wires of the piezo? I suppose the red wire should be soldered to the "free end" of the second resistor, but what about the black? Can you help me please?

Thanks!

UPDATE: I managed to fix the kick, I share what I did in case anyone finds it useful. ;)

After cleaning up all the mess made by the wrecked foams, I re-soldered the piezo wires to the jack plug: the red wire to the end of the resistor, the black wire to ground (i.e. the top terminal with metal)

To replace the foams, I bought a car sponge, cut it up and reshaped it into two sponges, one for the beater and a smaller one to hold the piezo and make it touch the head.

Finally, I've used hot glue for the piezo to the sponge and the sponges to the metal plate.

The solution works, but the cuts are not precise and this led to unwanted retriggering. So I've had to refine the settings in ext. trig by lowering the retrigger value and increasing the threshold. It's still not perfect, as I get retriggers occasionally, but overall it's playable and the fix only cost about 3-4 euros for the sponge.

Cheers
 :)
