Hall effect for DIY continuous HiHat Help!

I'm getting a bit desperate here.  I cannot go back to 3 stage triggering on the Alesis HH pedal and I'm having a lot of issues just getting a workable solution.

My goal is simply to convert a busted Alesis HH pedal (from a Surge kit) to a continuous one for triggering multiple levels of samples in Addictive Drums 2 through an eDrummin.

Should be pretty simple but I'm having no luck and know I must be doing something wrong with my limited electronics skills.  Anyway, through scouring forums I settled on buying A1302 Hall Effect sensors (see pic) for the task and a bunch of rare earth magnets.  Using the diagram provided by eDrummin for how it needs to be wired I soldered up the A1302 to a standard TRS 1/4" input jack being sure about the proper connections (also see pic).

Quite obviously I'm missing something important, perhaps a cap or something, but I cannot get it to register any signal when passing the magnets anywhere in the vicinity of the sensor.

Would anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong?
