New Simmons Bass and cymbal triggers.
« on: September 27, 2024, 10:58:31 PM »
Didn't know if anyone saw this yet:
Simmons adds full-size kick, cymbals

- KP180 Kick drum pad
- MC13, MC16 and MC18 electronic 3-zone cymbals

I get a feeling that Simmons if finally starting to think a little bigger with their offerings. What I don't get is why not a full kit? Why only pieces? Also, only Digital Drummer has any info on these so I'm guessing Simmons reached out to Digital Drummer specifically with this information.

I received the Digitaldrummer mag a few hours after you posted..didn't find much more info online...patent filings etc etc( including Guitar Center) other than the "Explainer" manual for the Kick floating around (Attached).
The cymbals are the first "production" low volume models I have seen with a strike pad.
It looks like a 180 degree switch for the Edge and no image of the bottom.
I know some modules (including the eDRUMin) do not like the waveform produced by Metal Cymbals maybe the strike pad will affect the waveform for the better.
October is here so according to the info they will be on the market soon enough..
No idea why starting with Individual Pieces..maybe to get part of the DIY Market like Goedrum and Lemon..pricing is reasonable.
..I don't know about using the Brown/Tan color..

EDIT:

The New Accessories page was being worked on and Kit Pieces were being added to the SIMMONS website  while I was posting..currently links for the individual products are not working and the New Accessories page link may be hidden/stop working by the time you see this post.

Looks like they are targeting the DIY'ers..Upgraders etc..

"With Simmons Accessories you can easily upgrade almost any brand and model of e-kit. You are no longer stuck with what you have, upgrade your e-kit your way".

I went looking in the patents as well and didn't find anything. I fingered if anyone could it would be you.  ;)

Your links are still working as of me posting this message. Of course the links in Simmons site on that page don't go anywhere yet. So you are right, they are working on the page still. I assume they went with the Brown/Tan color to better match the brass look of the cymbal. Honestly, with the first image I saw of the cymbals (Digital Drummer) I assumed the color was just off. But it does look like it might be Brown/Tan in color. I don't think it looks bad.

I had some ideas as to why only pieces and not a full kit, but I want to leave room for others to comment. Back when I was still talking to Simmons I was under the impression they never really had the budget to make a more capable module. Yes, Guitar Center is a large company, but (again, it was my impression) some of their brands are treated as a separated entities. So there are budgets in those brands. If I was to guess, it's easier to design and produces higher end triggers then the modules. That's why there is no complete kit. Pieces don't need computer hardware specs and software written.

It looks as if the Accessories pages are now working on the Simmons website. I don't actually see them for sale yet at GuitarCenter.com. The rubber on the cymbals looks more beige. It will be interesting to see if edrummers like the color or not. I can see why Simmons went with it. It does better match the brass cymbal color.

I noticed the main Simmons site hasn't added the New Acessories yet.
All Cymbals are Triple zone..Dual Output (Main and Aux) and No mention of a Dummy Plug or if one is need in the Manual/Compatibility guide.(Attached).
I wonder if it is a closed circuit and using "Switched" TRS Jacks.
The STRIKE Module looks to be the only Dual Cable where the Main Ride1 Input goes to Aux..and Ride2 goes to Main.

EDIT:
Added images..manual/Compatibility Guide

That would be cool if they did. I know I've advocated for something like this for a long time. I still have a couple of my own DIY dual zone pads that have Switched TRS Jacks in them for splitting off the rim zone. Think of it as a built in splitter.  ;)  It would automatically disconnect the rim in the drum pad when an external pad it plugged in. Of course the external pad in only a single zone trigger, but I still thought it was a good idea.

I will most likely purchase the 18 inch model for some testing. I like the concept. I'm a little worried that there might be some hot spotting, but I will find out once I buy one. If I like the 18 inch, I will most likely replace my current cymbals with these new Simmons cymbals.

It would appear as if Simmons is getting closer to release of these new cymbals and kick trigger because they just updated this link to include what is already available. Accessories

It looks as if Simmons did send out some pre-release cymbals. I found this guy on youtube giving them a go.:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwh5HIhT9PY

The rubber on his looks more grey than tan however.  :-\  I don't like the look of the grey. I really hope mine is more like the product picture.

Well, I'm guessing Simmons gave the okay for people (who got the new triggers sent to them early) to put out their videos because I just found another one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KG5k_EIAfY

Both just put up today (10/20/24).

I was posting as you added the New Video  link
I think it's more of a "Digital and Lighting" issue.."Smart" Digital tries to correct Color Temperature.
You can see the Cymbal above the other appears Tan..

The same as in this Video..In the beginning They look Tan..as the Camera pans around..the pad turns gray..then at 1:00 the top is Tan.. flipped over at 1:02 the plastic trigger housing/Rubber trim at the Edge looks gray..

You're probably right. I started thinking about that after I posted.

I know in the past Simmons was very interested in what Justin at 65Drums had to say about their products since he has a good following. So, I'm guessing 65Drums will have a video on these new triggers very soon as well. Just a guess as I no longer am in contact with anyone at Simmons.

This new e-cymbal from what I can hear the videos do sound softer than a traditional plastic/rubber cymbal trigger. I really am looking forward to getting the MC18 trigger. According to the tracking I got when I bought it, the package should be arriving tomorrow (10/22/24).  ;D

Well, I got my MC18 Simmons eCymbal today. I have not had a chance to add it to my kit and test it yet. I can tell you that the rubber on this cymbal is a brown/grey color (kind of like mud). Not the beige/tan that Simmons shows in their images. Admittedly that was a little disappointing. I think the beige/tan would looked a heck of a lot better.

- It feels weighty but not too heavy. For comparison I have a 16inch Alesis Strike cymbal that weights exactly the same as this Simmons 18inch cymbal. About 4-1/2 lbs.

- The build quality "looks" good (only time will tell). I even took it apart and the two machine screws on the font of the enclosure had some kind of loctite on them. That's really good.

- The rubber has really good stick rebound and the bell has a lot better rebound than the Alesis cymbals.

Once I get this on my kit, I'll report back on it triggering and tracking across the cymbal.
