Surge Mesh Piezo foam circles
« on: September 08, 2023, 09:11:36 PM »
Hi All
I've had to change the piezo on my Surge Mesh 10" snare (the usual snapped wire) and i have discovered that the foam circle the piezo disc goes into ,that is glued on the triangular metal plate (that screws into the base of the drum) is torn and worn out.
Where  would i get a replacement , or is it possible to make one ?

Any suggestions would be most helpful

I have a number of the Pad designs , but I don't have one specifically from the Surge kit so I can't compare designs..
Is the Foam solid..or Tubular?..
The Foam being used is of poor quality..see this Topic where a user had a DM10 MKII Pro 12" Failure and when I mentioned checking the manufacturing date (there was a design change) the Tech informed him that the Kit had sat on a shelf for 2 years and the Head went bad and caused everything else to fail (the foam was probably bad..Heads always stretch) and Alesis replaced it.

see this Topic.

If it's a Solid Type Quartz Percussion offers a 27mm for Roland Pads with Piezo... you can look and see if it's is similar in size to what you have..
They don't mention the thickness.

Also I have seen where a number of "Stores" sellers on ebay etc offering the 1" Foam circles that appear to be thick..but are actually Foam Adhesive circles like those from 3M or a copy and just stacked..you can get at Amazon...most are around 2MM thick..you can search for even thicker ones.
There are also 30mm as 1" is just under 27mm.
I can't comment on how well stacking would work.I use as decouplers (not hot glued) and they work well , but that's what is similar to what is used in most of the columns (segmented) on the pads..just stacked dots and the "Fix" for the STRIKE PRO SE is actually just segmented solid Foam circles (dots) staggered in size so they don't fall over.
I am seeing more an more Triggers using the Stacked foam like the ones offered at including WorldDrummers

Hi,
Thanks for your response, the foam pad in question is Tubular, 10mm high, 46mm (2.5inches)  wide and has a 27mm piezo sized hole in the centre

Hi,

Check your measurements..2.5 inches = 63.5mm.....46mm = 1.8 inches.
The Foam tube is an attempt at an isolation chamber for the Rim Piezo..

All the Piezo's in these "Newer" designs are solid mounted to a piece of acrylic..then a very thin double sided adhesive foam ring to attach the acrylic to the plate..creating a small chamber between the plate and the acrylic/Piezo.
Personally I have ripped out all these Piezo's including the Top 3 in the STRIKE Multipad and replaced using a 1" Decoupler.
Solid mounting the Piezo to acrylic keeps the Piezo from flexing properly..I don't think they have to worry about Patent Infringement. It's an over complicated design that doesn't work very well.
The columns/towers transfer vibrations to the plate for the outer Head Piezo.
If the Head is too loose hitting the center eventually sands/wears them down at an angle and they fall over.
Some of the Triggers/Pads Designs I have run across even have them glued to the Mesh Head.

Did you check the link posted above?..The trigger components are not available seperately other than the Piezo's which are found everywhere and cheap.
You can use pipe insulation or get some weather stripping (wall thickness depends on what yours measures at) and cut to length to make a circle then glue/attach etc.
I don't think it really matters if it's inches or Metric or if there is even a standard measurement..probably whatever is closest to the right Height x width combination etc

Here's an example on Amazon
