I thought I?d take the time to post a relatively easy cymbal choke fix that I managed to do - just in case it will help others who are looking for it. It may already be posted but I couldn?t find it so apologies if I'm repeating things already posted.
I recently bought a second hand DM10 kit with a broken headphone pot on the module (now fixed by a ?professional? who set fire to the PCB trying to solder it - but that?s another story).
Anyway, the cymbal choke for the DM 12? crash suddenly stopped working. The main crash sound was still good though. When I powered on the unit it also gave a calibration error and sometimes (mysteriously) very slight continuous rapid hits on the Kick layer B instrument.
To cut a long story short and after a lot of messing about I narrowed the problem down to the crash cymbal choke switch which I then took apart to see if I could fix it.
Turns out that you don?t even need to take apart the cymbal screws to fix this particular issue because it is caused but the touch sensitive switch strip located under the rubber cymbal cover at the front. I now wish I had taken some photos before I put it back on but I guess I could do this if anybody really needs them.
So when I had unscrewed the underside I used a multimeter to discover that the pressure sensitive choke ?switch? was stuck in the ?on? position.
You can access this strip without unscrewing the unit. You just need to carefully peel the rubber cover up from under the cymbal and pull it carefully just over the edge of the plastic. The switch strip is stuck just around the top of the rim of the plastic underneath. It consists of two layers loosely stuck together which come apart easily. The bottom layer appears to be the contact and I assume the top layer shorts these together when squeezed. In my case they had shorted together in one particular place and all I had to do was carefully un-peel the top layer, from each end separately just over half way along (putting it carefully back before doing the same from the other end) and, viola! Fixed! For now at least.
You can test to see if this has worked before you put the rubber back in place because if you plug the cymbal back in and switch on the module the error message should be gone and you should be able to choke the cymbal once again.
Any questions give me a shout.
