DM10 / DM5 PSU compatibility
« on: February 10, 2025, 10:02:55 AM »
Hi everyone,

my DM5 module is toast, does not trigger from my pads, then randomly starts triggering like crazy! hooked my pads up with same cables and 1/8 -1/4 adapater to an old ION module i have and the pads work just fine, and no ghost triggering.

ive been offered a DM10 module for an OK price, but it does not come with a PSU. does anyone know if the PSU from my DM5 would fit / work?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum !

If it's the factory Power supply for the DM5 it is 9 VAC however only 830mA...the DM10 needs 1.5A..almost double.
Have you tried a different power supply  to make sure the one you have isn't going bad?..Power supplies going bad cause the module to have odd behavior

What Version Firmware?..the Final is v1.02.
Is the module storing/saving edits etc...the onboard battery can go bad and also start odd behavior.
The DM5 has been out since 1995 and there was a board change over the years and the Eprom is soldered.

The current software version may be determined by simultaneously pressing both [<] and [> ] buttons.
The DM5 will momentarily indicate the current software version installed in the top line of the display.

it has been known some modules can be affected by static build (Heater running etc) during winter months.
Have you tried Powered OFF.. removing all cables..then add one trigger at a time (Powering OFF/ON in between each) to see if a specific trigger/input is causing it..or does the issue remain with everything disconnected ?

Have you tried to re-initialize the DM5?

"If your unit behaves erratically or ?freezes?, the first step is to power down the unit.
and power it back up again. Disconnect any cables connected to the MIDI IN jack,
and make sure that a sequencer or keyboard is not sending messages to the DM5 that
would make it behave erratically (such as a long stream of pitch bend messages on
16 channels simultaneously). If these steps do not solve the problem, you must re-
initialize the software."

What you described is considered erratic behavior so it can't hurt to re-initialize.
You'll lose edits etc but you'll know if it is "Toast" if the issue remains.

To re-initialize the DM5, hold down both the [VOICE] and [OUTPUT] buttons while
turning on the power. Once the power is turned on, immediately release both
buttons. The display will momentarily read:... Initializing.... This will reset all
MIDI and Trigger parameters and all of the Drum Sets to their default settings, and
will initialize the edit buffer.

thanks for the reply!

i did try single cable, one trigger at a time with a brand new cable but no joy except one of the cymbal inputs, which i got to trigger couple of times but not consistently, also i needed way to much force to pull the cables, although now they go in and out easy after first difficult pull (before that they probably had not been pulled for more than 10yrs). i didn't try powering off and on in between checking each input, but the random crazy triggering happens intermittently with no cables connected. the kit has been sitting in my loft (studio) connected up but powered off for few years, untouched as new baby took over and my loft filled with crap. i cleared it now and got my studio (mostly!) back. everything came back to life except the drums.

i opened up the DM5 and tried cleaning the input jacks with electrical switch cleaner but still no joy. i dont have a spare PSU to test with, i will try a factory reset - didn't think of that before, however, i got the upgrade bug now, and looking for second hand bang for buck!. i am after a DM10 Studio or Studio mesh (actually any variation of the old DM10 Kit, just not the MKII.) i recently, stupidly missed out on a DM10 Studio on Ebay at a decent price - it was up for 125GBP buy it now not too far from me. it had been up for more than a week, but i was a week away from pay day. I decided instead of buying and making the guy wait, or just scheduling collection accordingly, that i would grab it on payday and pay instantly, but alas it sold the day before :-(

I am not really a drummer, my DM5 original kit, expanded with some ION pads did me for years. i bought the DM5 about 18 years ago on eaby for not much, and not long after a bunch if ION pads to expand and use every input the DM5 had (ION pads seem identical to the DM5 pads) i got the ION for literally the cost of a pack of cigarettes! then more recently i got 8 inch real head to upgrade my snare, and liked it a lot! i play Guitar and uke really, and banjo, bass and keyboard not as well as guitar! the kit is for my studio for triggering BFD and just having some fun. i can knock out a few beats and that is about it.
