Surge Mesh Kit in Studio One using Impact Drums
« on: February 07, 2025, 05:16:15 PM »
Having trouble adding a sound to the ride cymbal.
The ride picks up but no sound...it's the 17th trigger and I think
it limits me to 16 triggers. Any work around for this? FYI
I still use Studio One 2, but I'm sure Impact works similar
in all versions. Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum !

This is more of a question for the Presonus Forum..however I see it was permanently closed down in Nov 2024.

Impact XT has a Maximum of 16..
Typically to build a bigger kit in a DAW you run multiple instances of an instrument..In Presonus you can create a Multi-Instrument using Multiple Instances of Impact XT..assign MIDI notes to each of the pads, and configure the outputs, once it's configured you can save the Multi Instrument and load it whenever you want...whether or not this Feature was available in Studio One 2 is another story..that's a pretty old version considering the current Version is 7.

EXAMPLE: 48 CHANNEL DRUM KIT
Drag Impact XT into an instrument track, then drag a second Impact XT to the same track then choose combine, drag a third Impact XT  to the same track and choose combine.
You can set colors for each of the Impact XT instances so that it is easy to tell which channels in the console are associated with which Impact XT instance.
It will look like this.

Groove Monkee created a Template (GM Standard) for Impact XT ...you could experiment with multiple instances of it and re-map.

I couldn't get it to work, just stuck the right tom tom cable into the ride cymbal and it works that way, though missing the one tom tom sucks. A better question now might be, how to record in midi using the surge's built in sounds, as they're far superior to the sound samples I have on my computer, or do I only have the option of recording the built in sounds using the line out on the module?

To send Audio playing the Surge Kit or using the Surge Module as a Sound Generator you connect the outputs to an Audio Interface...The USB is for MIDI only.

If you want much better sounds...

Steven Slate Drums has a FREE Version..limited to one 6pc Kit..SSD 5.5.
You'll have to create an account.

KRIMH DRUMS has a FREE Edition...geared more towards Metal.

BFD Player.
It has been specifically design for Alesis Products.
It is both Standalone and Vst....it's FREE and comes with a 5GB Core Library based on Dark Farm.
There are now expansions available with 4 Toms..
The Majority of software especially FREE or Limited DEMO are 5 pc kits (Kick/Snare/3-Toms) which is also the standard for E-Kits (w/o expansion pack etc)
A lot of the time all the MIDI maps are Not included so you may have to Map them...sometimes the Mapping is fixed and you have to Re-Map the Module

Follow the instructions in this topic for BFD Player..you need to setup an InMusic Profile..and InMusic Software Center.
Make sure you use the same email address for everything as it all gets connected.

BFDDrums BFD Player

Once installed/Audio MIDI setup etc..select the attached  Surge Mesh Kit Key/MIDI Map...just as you would for any Vst/DAW setup.
I created the Keymap with 4 Toms and removed Aftertouch as it was causing issues.
The Surge uses the GM Standard for MIDI Mapping so a number of other Maps for other Brands like Roland are exactly the same except the Surge sends a 1/2 open Note..which the Majority of Modules do not send.

Unzip and copy/place map to...

WINDOWS
C:\ProgramData\BFD Drums\BFDPlayer\System\Maps
