Alesis Crimson II HiHat Issues
« on: February 16, 2021, 10:11:34 AM »
Hello everybody I'm posting for the first time so I don't know if this has already been answered!

I bought a Crimson II around a year ago and just started out with how to record Midi and E-Drums in general, so I'm very new to this whole thing.
I've got the kit hooked up directly via a Midi-USB cable into my PC and I'm using Reaper and MT Power Drumkit 2.
However I don't get any HiHat sounds at all while the rest of the kit works just fine.
This includes the open/ closed HiHat, the footpedal by itself and the splash sound.
I got in contact with tech-support, which told me to check the output with Midi-Ox where I got the following results:

HiHat with footpedal pressed down:

 00002745   1   3     99    08    7F   10  G#-1 Note On
 00002745   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 000028DF   1   3     99    08    7A   10  G#-1 Note On
 000028DF   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00002A6F   1   3     99    08    7A   10  G#-1 Note On
 00002A6F   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00002BF5   1   3     99    08    7C   10  G#-1 Note On
 00002BF5   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00002D5D   1   3     99    08    76   10  G#-1 Note On
 00002D5D   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00002EA0   1   3     99    08    6E   10  G#-1 Note On
 00002EA0   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off

HiHat without pedal:

 000137D5   1   3     99    08    7F   10  G#-1 Note On
 000137D5   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00013974   1   3     99    08    64   10  G#-1 Note On
 00013979   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00013B2C   1   3     99    08    7F   10  G#-1 Note On
 00013B2C   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00013CE4   1   3     99    08    7F   10  G#-1 Note On
 00013CE4   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00013E8F   1   3     99    08    66   10  G#-1 Note On
 00013E92   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00014059   1   3     99    08    5A   10  G#-1 Note On
 00014059   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off
 00015C38   1   3     99    08    12   10  G#-1 Note On
 00015C38   1   3     99    08    00   10  G#-1 Note Off

I then tried to remap the HiHat in MT 2 from the default to G#-1 which didn't work and for some reason didn't line up with the mapping of the Crimson II module.
The only way I managed to get any sound at all was by assigning the HiHat another Midi-Note in the module, but that still gives me no sound with the pedal pressed down.
Tech-support told me, that the open/ closed sound is determined by different velocity values and quote: "the value 7F ( Note/ On Off 7F in Hex=Max Velocity/ 127 Bin on G#-1) is for the closed HiHat sound, while the other values are for the open HiHat sound. You need to check if your software allows you to reassign this command or if your software needs another Note On/Off command to close the HiHat."

And that's where I'm stuck... is there any way to get this working or reprogrammed? If so, I'm in anyones debt who can help me out!
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to make sure to give as much infos as possible.

Stay safe and healthy,

Cheers

The Crimson II and DM10 MKII Studio  have the open/closed tied to 1 MIDI note.
G#/Ab minus 1 octave (G#-1) is MIDI note 8..
The Hi Hat open/closed range is determined by the CC4/pedal position
I don't see any CC4 info shown in your post.
The Crash cymbals bow/edge are also tied to a single MIDI note (Crash(1)49,Crash(2) 57)
Out of all the Medeli DD650 Re-Brands only these 2 modules are that way.

The MT2 Power Kit does not recognize CC4....there were some workarounds.

There are MT2 MIDI DAW maps available if you don't already have it for Reaper

The "Hi Hat Combinations" are tied so you can't change individual voices and I can't remember if you could reassign the MIDI notes.
If you can't try using the other hi hat voices and see if you can reassign the open/closed notes
If you go into Voices..select Hi Hat..or Pedal..or Splash..You'll see there are "Hi Hat Combinations"  from 630-643...they are locked to the Hi Hat components..you select one..it is applied to all three.
You can assign any of the other Factory Voices to the HiHat,Pedal and Splash (including Hi Hat Voices 408-443 which is 9 groups of 4..HH,Edge,Pedal,splash) and to other kit pieces.. and they WILL save.

I’m not sure if this is of ANY help....but I use Cubasis 3 (iPad) and I trigger the recorded midi using its inbuilt sampler. It didn’t recognise the difference between the open and closed hh, because as mentioned it’s tied to one midi Chanel.....but...weirdly, when I changed the hh midi channel, (to midi channel 7) then, the closed hh registered on channel 8 and the open on channel 7 - which goes against what I’d read on numerous sites, that, the hh open/closed is tied to ONE midi channel. So, my guess is, it’s only tied to ONE midi channel as default, but you can change the open hh channel.
As I said, not much help if you’ve already tried changing the brains hh midi channel, but interesting for sure.

Did you get the issue fixed?
