Purpose of mesh heads

Is the main reason people convert to mesh heads to lower the volume or for better feel when playing? Or both? I have a USB pro kit w surge cymbals. I added the DM10 module and a 12" snare which I converted to a mesh pearl head. Recently I have been playing on a Yamaha kit at church that has all rubber pads. I am not sure why, but it is more fun to play on than my setup. It could be that all the toms are 10" but also that harder rubber has a quicker bounce.

My main use is for practicing but also recording. I am thinking about getting heavier ply mesh heads which seem overpriced these days. Any recommendations?

Mesh heads are quieter, but I also thought the provided a better playing feel than rubber pads.
