Hello and some Amplification advice please
« on: March 05, 2012, 07:12:12 AM »
Hello All from across the pond.

I'm new to the forum and completely new to drumming at the tender age of 40!!
After lurking around here for a few weeks and reading some great advice/reviews by the members, I bought a DM8 Pro kit and i must say I'm absolutely loving it! For someone who has never sat behind a kit before (acoustic or electric) it was just so easy to set up and get started. The inbuilt sequences and learning tools are great and have been invaluable for a 'drum virgin' such as myself  :P

Anyway, back on topic. I have a small 30w bass amp that I am using at the moment which is not great but okay, but in future plan on a better method for sound output.
So my query is which is the best option from the following and has anyone any experience with them. (Not sure about the budget at the minute but I'm thinking maybe £300 max.)

Yamaha Stagepas 150
http://www.reidys.com/index.pl?submit=View_PLU&PLU=11114
(recommended for vocals and keyboards but any good for drums?)

Yamaha MS50DR
http://www.reidys.com/index.pl?submit=View_PLU&PLU=10696
(I know it's for DTX kits but will it work okay with the DM8 Pro?)

Alesis Transactive Monitor
http://www.musicjunkie.co.uk/mobile/product/Alesis-TransActive-Drummer-Electric-Drum-Monitor
(is it loud enough?)

Or does anyone have any other recommendations..? All advice gratefully recieved :)

Cheers Guys

Gary

If you can wait a couple of days, i'll try out my new Behringer Bass cab i just bought (for playing bass not drums) and see what it's like. 300w 15" speaker and was £190 from amazon.

Welcome & congrats on taking the plunge.

On this side of the pond, many of us use the Simmons DA200.  I do not know if it's available where you are; it's sold (and owned) by Guitar Center, which is US Big Box retail applied to musical instruments.

Hi Gary,

I own the Alesis transactive drum amp : it is perfectly fine and loud for personal and band practice. It make a really good job with deep bass sound and high range for cymbal sounds.

For little gigs, i doubt 50 W would be enough (depends the style and the guitars volume  ;))

dd : yeah, it looks like the Simmons hasn't made our shores yet - a shame really as it's well recommended.

Thanks ungoliant, it was the first amp i thought of but hadn't read any owner reviews so was unsure about it's performance. I'm not planning on gigging, so for home practice should be ideal.

dan : look forward to hearing your thoughts on that. It's about the same price as the Alesis so may be worth considering. Are you putting drums through it as well as a bass?

Thanks for all the help guys..

Gary

Keyboard amps are the way to go. I think "Drum" specific amps are charged a premium. I use the Behringer 180W Ultratone with a 12" woofer. It costs less than 50W drum amps, and sounds amazing with tons of effects. There is a 300W model for not much more but it is big. If you want to go the monitor route, the Stagg SMS15P is half as much as a Mackey Thump.
