DM10 Trigger Config files (Studio or Pro)
« on: December 27, 2010, 11:46:01 PM »
***Stock DM10 Config files are attached to the bottom of this post***
I'm looking for a few good members who use their DM10 kit as stock. I mean the kit itself and not the tweaks to the module. You can use a Studio or Pro kit. I hope to get both. The reason I'm looking for you is because I have been getting many questions about crosstalk and sensitivity issues for new users (these are typically people who have never played drums or edrums before).

What I'm hoping for is a few members who use their kit in a stock configuration and have their modules tweak so the kit preforms really well for them. Meaning good sensitivity and little crosstalk. The physical kit itself must be 100% stock. No mesh mods, four leg rack mods, separate snare stands, or any other modification that is outside of stock (as pictured by alesis).

Once a few of you come forward, I'm hoping to get you guys to dump your trigger setting to a .syx file. Trade them with each other to see how much you guys like each others setting and then choose an over all good one that can be placed in a sticky for all new owner (who are typically new to drumming in general) so they can have some decent settings from the get go (or at least better than stock).

I would do this myself, however my Pro kit is heavily modified and it would require me to undo all of my mods (very time consuming and I would have to replace parts which I no longer have).

The .syx file that is chosen for the sticky will get full credit for everyone on the forum to see. If you guys want, we can post several different ones and let people vote which one is the best.

If you would like to help, please upload a .syx file of just your trigger setting to this thread (again, you must be using a stock config). Be sure to state if you are using a Studio or Pro kit with your trigger config file.

Thanks for your help.

Added 01/02/11:

Additional notes from the DM10 manual. Keep in mind you will need MIDI-OX (PC) or SysEx Librarian (Mac) to preform any of these functions:

SYS (F4) Backing up Trigger Settings

Pressing SYS (F4) from the Main Utility menu lets you access a page that contains the module's various
system settings.

SYSX (F1)
This page lets you send out the module's settings as a SysEx (.syx) file
to be recalled later.
1. Press UTILITY to enter the main Utility Menu.1).
2. Use CURSOR UP / DOWN to move through the menu items:
a. All Memory: All of the module's memory that can be saved
will be saved as a SysEx file.  This includesyour trigger
settings, Kits, and Sequences.
b. All Trigger Settings: Only the module's trigger settings will be saved as a SysEx file.
(This is what is needed for this topic)
3. Press SEND (F4) to send the selected settings from the module as a SysEx file.

_________________________________________________

RESTORING BACKUP SYSEX FILES

To load a backup SysEx file to the module from your computer, follow these steps:

1. With the module off, connect the module's USB port to your computer with a standard USB cable.
2. Press and hold the module's STORE button and turn it on. The LCD should display, "MIDI RESTORE
Waiting..." This means it is ready to receive a SysEx file from your computer.
3. Use a MIDI utility to send the appropriate SysEx file to the module (which will need to be selected as
the receiving MIDI device). We recommend the following utilities:
MIDI-OX (PC): http://www.midiox.com
SysEx Librarian (Mac): http://www.snoize.com/SysExLibrarian/
4. The LCD will indicate when the process is complete.  Once it is complete, restart the module.

Added 01/31/11:

I have added Tsints and ProbeGT's DM10 trigger setting files to the bottom of this post to make it easier to find them. Again, I would like to thank these two members for taking the time to post their setting and helping so many new members who are having issues with the triggering of their new kits.

Added 01/15/14:
Just restoring Trigger settings (not full module back-up)

"Just send the trigger settings without doing anything special with the module."

To restore just the trigger settings:
  • Start with your module on and connected to your computer via USB (or midi I suppose)
  • Select your module (or midi interface I suppose) in your SysEx utility (in SysEx Librarian it'll be in the drop down list at the top of the window)
  • Send the trigger settings.
  • The module will not acknowledge that anything has happened, but your trigger settings will be updated.
No need to reboot or anything. Scroll through the inputs in trig edit and have a look at the shiny new settings.
I noticed that this works on the RedBox even if WriteProtect is ON! So I suspect it would be the same on the DM10.

Thanks for helping out Tsints. The only advice I can give about uploading to a PC (because I'm on a MAC) is the directions on page 31, 34 of the DM10 manual.

I can tell you how I do this on my mac but it may differ slightly on the PC. On my Mac I use a software called SysEx Librarian (for the PC you might want to try MIDI-OX).

I first connect up my DM10 to my computer via USB, and then I power on the DM10. I then start up SysEx Librarian. I choose the DM10 as the device. I then click on the "Record Many" option. I then go over to my DM10 and go to the SysEx Send menu and high light the "All Trigger settings" and press F4 (SEND). The Sysex data is then recorded by SysEx Librarian and stored to a file. At this point I normally rename the file to something that makes sense. Like TrigBackup12_10.syx.

That is pretty much it. It should be a pretty small file, less than 1K (about 222 bytes I believe).

OK, I selected the DM10 as an input device, and when I sent the trigger settings through the module, this is what I got...

How am I going to save it as a .syx file?

It looks like it should work. Thanks Tsints. By the way, this is a good way to back up your settings on your DM10. You might want to do the All memory backup for yourself (and save it somewhere on your computer) just in case your DM10 hiccups.;) I do this all the time because I like customizing my sound settings in each kit.

Newbie here.  Just got my set today and having the same issues you speak of here.  I'm new to the edrum world, so any and all help is greatly appreciated.  Maybe one day I can be on the helping end.   ;)

I am able to back up my .syx files to my Maclike a champ, but now how do I take the trigger settings from Tsints.syx back to the module?

It would also be cool if someone who has done the mesh conversion could post their settings, as I plan on doing it to mine. Also, it would help people who do the conversion but don't know how to change their parameters for that.

Hell Fire, i would be glad to help as well. I have a dm10 pro all stock but my settings i must say are almost flawless. I say almost because every now and then ill get some ride mis-triggers.

I will up load the settings sometime this weekend when i am home.

I do have a question tho...my hihat does something very weird that i can't figure out. 50% of the time i hit it it does a double hit sound. So ill hit it once but it'll trigger 2 hits. Really annoying. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Cool thanks for the help.
On your hi-hat you might want to try upping your "Retrigger" value some. I hope that helps.

Has anyone gotten this to work yet? I have been trying to get my kit setup for 5 days now. It's driving me crazy. I tried to use Tsints syx with Midi-Ox, but it never loaded in to the dm10.

Also, I have constant triggering from my toms and snare, but it doesn't go away if i disconnect them, only if i turn the volume down for them???

ALL help is appreciated!

camodragon09:  On each trigger that's firing when you don't want it to, turn UP the threshhold one number at a time until that one stops.  That should stop the triggering.  If not, check the sensitivity, you may have it too high, so LOWER it a bit at a time, maybe 5, until it stops triggering.  Most likely, one of these will fix it.

The threshold fixed the background noise, thank you!

I still cannot successfully do a mem dump, or load any syx to my module. I wonder if i'm using MIDIox wrong.

I have changed every setting on the kit, and still have trouble with missing rolls and doubles.

I think I would be in good shape if I could get the syx thing to work right.

Re: rolls and doubles... Many of us seem to have that problem on Tom1, but not on Tom2, 3 & 4.  I was having trouble with 2, 3 & 4 until I LOWERED my xtalk SND setting (I had it too high, 7) on the snare and toms.  If that doesn't do the trick, LOWER the xtalk RCV as well, but only by one at a time.  That should help.  Also, LOWER your retrigger setting on the ones that won't retrigger.  Do all adjustments a little at a time, you'll get it.

However, on Tom1, I have not been able to get fast rolls, along with many others.  Personally, I think there's a problem with that trigger port in the DM10.  That is why I tried to load the TSINT syx file, but have not been able to yet.  My MidiOX says it's sending, but the DM10 never responds or seems to change.  I even set a bogus setting on one of the triggers, to see if it got overwritten, but it never does.

I bought the Studio kit with DM10 and must say that having to change all these settings just to get the darn drum pads to sound/play correctly seems like terrible product engineering. We should be able to plug this baby in and play, that simple. I'm reading posts like users having to stuff shirts in the tubes etc.. just to prevent false triggering from vibrations? Can you say "Terrible Product?". I really wish I had found you guys and this forum BEFORE purchasing this kit. Now it makes sense to me why Alesis is charging $500 more for what they call the "Pro" kit. Seems like they removed a cymbal, which was causing problems along with a tom pad(tom1 input issue). Instead of having to re-develop the DM10 to fix the bugs, they simply remove the items used for those inputs and Vollaa! It works and we can call it PRO(more profit!!). I have noticed all the universal problems with this ekit and am definitely packing it up and returning it. I called Alesis and they assured me there was NO issues with the tom1 problem and they would look into it and get back to me via email. It's been 2 weeks without a response and now I cannot even get through to a human support person. There are no fixes for this module and I highly advise if you are at all unhappy with this product to return it and purchase a different manufactured ekit guys and gals. My local drum shops will not carry these kits or even order them for a customer...Good luck to everyone who has problems. You will not have this ekit working 100%, Ever,   Jim

Jim,

I have to disagree with you on a couple points.  I purchased the DM10 studio, and although I DO have a Tom1 issue, I have NO other issues that I have not resolved with tuning.

Also, I think I'm correct in saying that the DM10 studio and the DM10 Pro both use the same module.  Also, I have NO problems with my 4th cymbal at all.  I originally had all four of the DM10 studio cymbals with NO problems, and swapped three of mine with someone who had the Surge cymbals and needed the quieter cymbals.  I'm just as happy with these as I was with the others.

I've worked around the Tom1 issue for now by moving my Tom1 to my Perc4 port, which I hardly ever use, and all is great now.

The sounds from this drum set are great, too!

No matter what e-drum kit you buy, you are likely to find SOMETHING about it that you don't like, and won't be 100% happy, and I'm hopeful that Alesis will eventually "fix" the customer support problems they are having right now.

Right now, I'm 98% or more happy with the set, so that's not bad.

Welcome to the forum Jim.

I'm guessing you never actually tried the config files at the start of this thread?

Just for your information (since you didn't fact check) the Pro was the first DM10 kit made available and only about five members out of 900+ have reported the Tom #1 issue (six if you include yourself). I've had my DM10 kit since 2009. I don't have these issues.

Good luck with your next purchase.

Hi Jim, sorry for your dissatisfaction and problems. Being a casual acoustic drummer for approx 13 years, I was very leary about purchasing an electronic kit in any form, but am VERY happy that I did. I don't have the tom1 issue others are reporting. I thought I did at first, but after a lot of tweaking settings (which I will agree gets a little old), everything works great... including tom1.

On another note, more on-topic, I have my 100% stock kit dialed in to a comfortable near-perfection and when I figure out how to & have time to, I plan on contributing my parameters to this thread.

Thanks for the welcome!

I've performed every possible manual setting change/configuration in the forum that addresses all the known issues with the DM10.. many hours with xtalk, sensitivity etc..

My module will not even accept a custom syx file which some have posted as attachments. It has to be that my module is faulty.

If a few people do not have an issue with the tom1, I'll have to assume some of the modules are faulty and some are not. I've tried EVERY setting configuration and still tom1 will not function properly on tom1 input, like many others. My doubles, triples etc.. are not picked up on that channel. Some DM10 modules are able to import custom syx files and some not.(according to forum posts) Where are the answers? Definitely not from Alesis. Has anyone received any answers from Alesis for their issues? I haven't seen a post where Alesis support helped anyone. Maybe I just need a replacement DM10 module and everything will work fine.

If someone has exact step directions on how to import a custom syx file with MIDI-OX I would love to read them although I'm pretty sure I did it correctly. The module just is non responsive when trying to import...I used 3 different midi programs as well.

Thanks everyone,

Jim
