Scuffing on kick drum
« on: September 27, 2023, 05:22:20 AM »
Hello Everyone,
This is probably a minor thing, but I use a triple-headed beater on my Alesis mesh kick drum. (I use the maple or plastic side, not the felt side.)  I've noticed some scuff marks on the kick drum mesh.  I've got the beater set up as near to the centre of the drum as I can, and apart from the slight scuffs the mesh looks fine. Is this anything to be concerned about?
With many thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike! Long time since I've communicated with you so thought I'd jump in on this one. I imagine all the mesh heads esp kick will eventually wear through even using the plastic or wood sides of a beater. What I do is apply a patch to my kick drum and that may extend the life of the underlying mesh (maybe I'll be contradicted by another responder?). I'm using the Evans mesh fabric type as it blends nicely with the black mesh of my kick drum and I buy the double sized ones because I have a double pedal but they come in single sizes too.. here's an example:

https://www.amazon.ca/Evans-Double-Pedal-Patch-Black/dp/B0002D0DWK/ref=asc_df_B0002D0DWK/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=335943297039&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4136548701033098498&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000680&hvtargid=pla-383594679024&th=1

I find they adhere well enough and don't change the feel or reactivity of the drum. My only regret is when my first patch began to wear through (and I hadn't noticed) all of a sudden the beater was sticking slightly on each tap and I thought I was just out of practice but realized it had worn through and the glue was exposed. I replaced it but maybe the next time it wears through I'll try going without and see if the head wears about the same time frame as the patch would. To be honest, I'm not too hard a hitter and I don't play my Alesis that much now that I have an acoustic set that I prefer to be on.. I think my head is going on ten years! :-)
