How do you monitor your DM10
« on: December 11, 2010, 09:21:31 PM »
I was wondering how everyone here listens to their DM10 while playing. I run mine through a small mixer and use VST's on my Mac. I had an inexpensive pair of Sony headphones but I was getting distortion when I played my drums at high volume. I've been shopping for new high quality headphones and settled on the Beats line by Monster / Dr. Dre. (In Ear version) I got them today and I am VERY impressed with the quality and clarity at high volume levels. The sound of my rig is AMAZING. I just couldn't hear it through the phones I was hearing them through. What do you guys use?
As of now: DM10 Studio Kit with additional SURGE cymbals and DM5 pads.

I tried those ear buds... they had a really good low end.  I was curious how they would sound with the DM10.

Can you hear stick to pad?   Or does it seal the ear canal enough?

I use a pair of Shure over ear headphones.  I like them a lot...  good range.

The tips I use isolate the music. I tried the over the ears too and loved them but the in ears are easier to transport. So far so great.

I usually plug straight into my amp via main stereo outs, or use the headphones out with earbuds or studio phones. I can hear better through the phones but I'll get "ear fatigue" after awhile so I generally like to play through the amp.

I'm only playing my kit in my home studio.

It's DM10 ---> MOTU 896HD ---> SM ProAudio M-Patch2 monitor controller ---> Audiometric AM441 power amp ---> Event 20/20 passive nearfield monitors. If I'm using headphones, I use AKG K240 or maybe Fostex T-20. My DAW is a Core2Duo / Sonar PE7 / Superior 2.0 and many other libs.

The above sounds good but my next purchase is likely 2 powered JBL PA speakers and for that I will take a couple of channels out of the 896HD and into my MAckie 1604 to these JBL's

Watch out with listening with headphones to the loud output of a DM10. Preserve your hearing!

As I stated within my lobby thread, I use a small 5-channel mixer which is fed with the DM10 and my laptop (its audio software). While recording or just rehearsing I listen to the DM10 sounds and the click from the audio software. When I playback the recorded stuff on the laptop, I use VST. Weird, I know, but since my laptop is very old (6 years) the latency is killing me when listening to VST while playing. So I don't enable VST during recording, only while editing. But that's fine for me, the DM10 sounds aren't bad (the are the opposite of bad :D).

I use the audio-technica ATH-M50 headphones. Plenty of volume, excellent tone and can handle any kick drum or snyth bass I push through 'em.

I go straght from my DM10 to a 200 Watt 15" 2 way harbinger amplified speaker. Use it for rehearsals, in my studio, and smaller live performances.

I just added a Simmons DA200S to my arsenal...

I plug in EITHER my two Rogue 10" speakers OR my two Yamaha 15" speakers to the external speaker outs on it, and I have plenty of sound for my purposes.

If I need more bang, I go through my Yamaha EMX5000-12 mixing amp.
DM10 Studio 2011 w/Surge Cymbals added, BB Mesh head conversion w/rubber muffs at bottom, one 12" A-E pad, Simmons DA200S, sometimes using 2 satellite speakers... Simmons SDMP-1 Multi-pad.

I use the L1 model 1 Bose System.  Its amazing!  If you want more bottom end though you need either get another bass module or use the bass out and use a bass amp for more 'thump'.  I use a crate 100watt 15" bass amp and it works fine.

If I want to play silently tho I just plug in my in ear skull candy earphones.  They work just fine and have excillent bass response.  Seriously underated headphones! Better than anyother headphones iv ever used.

Sony MDR-7506 coming out of an old Mackie mixer.  Lets me take a monitor send when playing live, and manage click and drum sounds in one place.

AKG K271 IIs, Sony Studio closed back (old, but good).

Direct connect with Denon AVR3806, Adcom GFA700, Adcom GFA565s on my 7 channel system.  This way is fantastic at louder levels, but it's a little inconvenient and bothers the neighbors on both sides (I live in a house)!!!
Strike Pro, Dm10, Zildjian Gen 16 hats, xhats and garbage cymbals, Kit Toys chinas, crash and splashes, jam dock, mixer, custom 13" tom, alesis, drum workshop and various hardware.

While I don't have a DM10, I monitor my electronics in different ways depending on the situation...

Practice: GK Ultraphones or In ears and an aura shaker

Live: Either I use an 8 channel powered head or if using my "Wedding kit" the power is in the rack shown here: http://www.dmdrummer.com/index.php?topic=795.msg7097#msg7097

In either event I have a pair of 15" speakers w/ a horn and an 18" sub. one stack or two depends on the venue...

For practicing alone, Metrophones, but they're soon to be replaced with Sennheiser HD-280.

For live/rehearsal, Simmons DA200 facing me, line out the back of it to the PA.
DM10 Studio 2011, BBII mesh conversion w/ resistors left in place, Simmons DA200S, ProMark 7A nylon, Sennheiser HD280 headphones, Gibraltar rack, Camco double pedal.

For small venues, like bars, I've been using a Bose L1 Compact Portable PA system. The sound is unbeleivable. All vocals go thru it also.

DM10x2 Pro with surge cyms + additional surge crash and tom + Roland PD125 snare + Roland KD120 Kick with Iron Cobra double pedals, all with mesh heads(HellFire conversion - BBIII), DM7 USB, USB Pro, Trigger I/O, Tama percussion, Conga's, Bongo's, Roto Toms, cow bell and block.

Don't have my DM10 yet, waiting for it to come in.  At church though I use AKG K240s that I'll prob use at home as well, or I have a JBL Eon as well.
