Sounds like the piezo has fallen off the bottom of the metal plate (or the plastic disk). The internals of the pads are pretty simple. Just whip the head off and have look.
Be careful looking under the metal plate. The piezo is (should be) attached the where you plug the lead in, with a short and very delicate pair of cables. Lift the plate from the side opposite from where you plug your lead in.
