Author Topic: Is there a way to change how Reason determines "which drum is which" via USB?  (Read 4288 times)

Greetings,

I have a DM6 that I am using with Reason. Everything works fine, but Reason takes the 9 signals from the DM6 module, and sorta puts them in inconvenient locations in regards to how the units like Redrum or Kong interpret them.

That's a really confusing statement. What I mean, is that when plugged in and having Reason set to the Kong unit, it is a 4x4 grid of 16 sounds. Reason maps the DM6 pads to just random pads. So the bass drum is down on pad 1, but then the snare is up on pad 13, and the first tom is pad 4, etc etc.

This being the case, I can't just use a Reason drum kit by default since the DM6 drums and the expected pads don't line up, I have to go and set the pads to be the corresponding type of drum... which means the bass is on 1, the snare is on 13, the crash is on 8, the ride is on 4, etc etc. So each kit I want to use, I have to re order the samples.

Is there any way around this? Can Reason be edited? Can I choose the mapping from drum module -> software so that at least Reason natively interprets them in a logical order?

Welcome to our forum, Sean!

Unfortunately ReDrum and Kong both have a fixed MIDI note assignment, so that every input MIDI note will be routed to a certain pad. You could customize this assignment/template by using i.e. Thor or the Combinator as a sending module in Reason to re-map such incoming notes.

Another option would be to use stand-alone MIDI tools for re-mapping on your system in conjunction with Reason.

Interesting. I have only used keyboards in the past and never had to remap.

With the sending module idea, what are the parts of the thor I need to edit to do that? Would the nnxt work as well?

Also, do you know what sort of midi mapping tools I could use on a Mac to manually do it?

I'm no Reason specialist and I was only reporting what some forum entries on the web have stated. But within the concept of Reason, Thor should just re-send incoming MIDI notes to the next modules with new/different note values. Don't know if NNXT is able to do this also.

For mapping MIDI notes on a Mac in general, MidiPipe (freeware) is the tool of first choice ;)

Greetings,

I have a DM6 that I am using with Reason. Everything works fine

I just got a DM6 for Christmas and I am trying to get it to work with Reason.  HELP!  I can see the DM6 as e-drum in my midi setup, but I can seem to get it to trigger anything in Reason.  Can someone get me in the right direction?

EDIT: I figured it out.  :-)  I didn't have the Midi out format selected on the DM6.  Now I have to figure out my mappings!
